Bridging Reality and Fantasy Through Digital Art

At XPPen's milestone 20th anniversary celebration, themed "Back to Future, Create Now!", we engaged in an in-depth dialogue with Giusy Amoroso about creativity and the future of digital art. As an innovative Italian digital artist, her work seamlessly bridges the realms of technology and nature. From her childhood memories along the Naples coastline to her current position at the forefront of immersive digital art, Giusy's journey embodies the transformative power of creative technology.

Drawing inspiration from both the digital and natural worlds, Giusy has developed a distinctive artistic style that she describes as "alien aesthetics with organic fusion." Her work, which spans 3D sculpture, animation, and emerging technologies like VR and XR, transforms everyday objects into extraordinary digital experiences. She emphasizes the crucial role of drawing display in her creative process, particularly praising the precision and intuitive nature of XPPen devices in texture mapping and detail refinement.

Her creative journey exemplifies the transformation of imagination into reality, viewing the future as a canvas rich with possibilities, breaking traditional boundaries with an exploratory spirit. This passionate embrace of diverse artistic forms and unrestricted creative expression deeply resonates with XPPen's vision of "Back to Future, Create Now!", inspiring more creators to boldly express their authentic selves.

XPPen: What motivated you to dive into digital art and start your creative journey?

Giusy: Since I was a kid, I spent a lot of time playing video games and exploring fantasy worlds and that made me very curious about how these digital worlds were actually created. Also, growing up by the sea in Naples, I developed a really deep love for the underwater world and nature in general and these two things combined with technology and nature shaped the way I see things today and inspired me to create my own surreal worlds and alien forms.

XPPen: As an artist, what influences and inspires your creative concepts and distinctive visual language

Giusy: I find inspiration in many things: nature, all kinds of living beings, art books and also the city where I live, actually Berlin in Germany. It has such a unique energy and many contrasts, plus a great diversity of people and cultures that keep me inspired and curious, giving me always new ideas and inputs from nature. However, has always been my main inspiration. I try to spend as much time as I can in nature, walking in the forest and listening to birds. I aim to find a balance with the city being surrounded by nature keeps me actually very grounded, connected and inspired, it calms my mind and gives me space to think.

XPPen: In your view, what value does a brand like XPPen bring to the creative community?

Giusy: Brands like XPPen matter, because they give artists the tools they need to create tools that are innovative, easy to use and accessible. This empowers more people to start making art and to express their ideas in new ways. They also play a big role in supporting artists' dreams by making professional tools affordable, so you don't need huge budgets to bring your ideas and vision to life. I think it's very important and brands like XPPen help build a community around creativity because when artists connect and support each other, it inspires new ideas and helps everyone grow. Collaboration and sharing knowledge can be very valuable.

XPPen: In what ways does XPPen's pen display enhance your creative workflow?

Giusy: A drawing display is definitely one of my most important tools when I'm painting textures. I need the color to be really accurate, so I know exactly how my materials will look like in the final render.  And when I'm sculpting or detailing, having a pen that feels natural and precise just makes the whole process much smoother. Having a tablet with touch functionality is definitely a big plus, because it lets me interact better with my work and speeds up my workflow. And I also think that when technology becomes more intuitive and accessible. It empowers more artists to share their vision, so these tools remove restrictions so art can happen anywhere and reach anyone.

XPPen: How do you see the relationship between art and technology? In what ways do you think new tools can help artists express themselves or connect more deeply with audiences?

Giusy: In the future, I believe VR and 3D, paired with other advanced technologies, will open up new possibilities, making collaboration easier from anywhere in the world and blending virtual and real worlds. 3d and VR are already making big changes across many fields in education, for example, VR lets students explore things like anatomy or history in immersive ways that books simply can't offer. VR is creating new kinds of storytelling where you're not just watching but you're inside the story, so you feel more connected.

XPPen: Could you share your thoughts on XPPen's 20th anniversary theme, 'Back to Future, Create Now!'

Giusy: For me, 'Back to Future' is about seeing the future as an open space full of possibilities, not something to be afraid of. It's a reminder of why we look ahead and imagine what's next. We also need to stay very connected to the present and to what really matters to us. As artists, I believe that by staying curious and grounded, we can keep exploring new ways to create. My journey is about experimentation and breaking away from traditional ideas and I think this is what makes the future so exciting. There are no fixed rules, only new ways to express ourselves and connect with others.
