Pen Tablet for for Technical Drawing
For the past decade I've been a mechanical drafter / designer using mainly AutoCAD, inventor and Solidworks, but also a little fusion 360 and in my free time I do digital art using an iPad and a Windows laptop with XPPen digitizer.
I use a XPPen Deco 01 V2 graphic tablet as my main input device for cursor-control, including for CAD Programs. In my opinion XPPen ones have the best Price/quality value.
Use pen and tablets have a few benefits, I use Deco 01 V2 because I have an RSI that makes using a more "normal" device like a mouse too painful. and it have 8 buttons to create shortcuts for things I commonly do, which is super handy.
It basically replaces the mouse for better ergonomics; that's really all it does, except it (can) use absolute positioning instead of relative, meaning each part of the tablet is mapped to a specific point on your screen.
But Typically if you're drawing things up in a parametric CAD software, you aren't really “drawing” things freehand.
You're using geometric elements (lines, arcs, circles, etc.) and then defining their properties. For example, you wouldn't “draw” a circle, you would select the center point and diameter of the circle.
So as a professional drafter and an amateur artist I would say skip the tablet unless you plan on doing art with it as well. The drawing tablet is great for artistic drawing, modeling or 3D sculpting in Blender, SketchUP and Zbrush.
However, if you are set on getting the pen tablet, consider a drawing tablet with screen like XPPen Artist series. it's definitely nice to be able to draw directly on the screen. It feels really near to drawing on a paper. The only down side is they are not cheap but the comfort is worth it if you're on a computer all day.
If you're on a budget, then a tablet without a screen like a Deco 01 V2 is probably your best bet.
Also it should be noted that cad packages are slowly adding touchscreen/stylus support and features. I think solidworks introduced some neat stylus features. So yah I guess what I'm saying is follow your heart?
